You remember Kevin Lester‘s track Rockstar which received plenty of acclaim when it was launched; now he’s back again with the sexy vocals of Vanessa Fernandez. Filmed during Bedsty’s Good Times at Blu Jaz and titled Rockstar 2.0, the track shines just like the original. Check out the original video here.

ZNC, PHBKLK and a crew called WHO? had a day of pure aerosol madness last weekend over at the Somerset Skatepark. A rare occurence in SG, the graffiti competition felt more like a jamming session between the crews- they came, saw and conquered the walls with their own unique styles of techniques and illustrations. Though more could be done by the organizers, the crews were able to do what they do best without the men in blue breathing down their necks. More pictures after the jump.

CREWS: ZNC: Slacsatu,Clogtwo,S13,Sandman
PHBKLK: K, Katun, Budean
WHO?: Botz, Reist, Ajar

A brief intro of WHO? :
Initiated by Rafie (Botz), the crew was stitched together with the main purpose of creating dynamic art and graphics that flows from the heart and soul of the crew through graffiti. With much more to learn and grow, this young crew has the passion and desire to produce vibrant pieces with the sole intention of introducing new styles to the world of graffiti and arts.
Crew members: Ajar, Botz, Reist, Yovag, Ekro, Raqk, Crank, Mez, Crimson, SpekONE, Vox, Savi, Marcus

BOO JUNFENG: SANDCASTLE http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/08/26/sandcastle/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/08/26/sandcastle/#comments Thu, 26 Aug 2010 04:32:50 +0000 Tara Tan http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=4538

Here’s a Singaporean story we can call our own. In Sandcastle, local filmmaker Boo Junfeng, 26, crafted a masterful, poignant and sensitive film about a boy’s coming-of-age in Singapore.

Sandcastle debuted in Cannes Film Festival 2010 to raving reviews, and is now showing exclusively at Golden Village Cinema Europa.

The story centers on an 18 year old boy, En, who grapples with his grandmother’s dementia, his first romance and the discovery of his late father’s involvement with the 1950s student riots.

One of the most eloquent and beautiful films to come out of local cinema in a while, Sandcastle documents the nuances and intricacies of social relations in a society that is struggling with its own identity and history. Like a crumbling sandcastle, too often are our country’s memories washed away, forgotten or buried in a collective amnesia. The same fate follows our personal memories, as we age.

There are beautiful parallels woven into this film. As the grandmother’s dementia detoriates, En gets more intrigued by the past and he begins excavating the old photographs and documents in his grandparents’ house. Deaths in and of past relationships are accompanied by the blossoming of young love and romance between En and his next-door neighbour.

Boo tells the story with much sensitivity and pathos. Embedded within the film are sly and cheeky references to the social and political nature of Singapore, as well as knowing nods to the complex and fragile multi-religious relations within and between families in our multi-faith society.

A humble film that speaks volumes, Sandcastle captures the ethos of this generation.

Sandcastle is now showing exclusively at Golden Village Cinema Europa. http://www.gv.com.sg/searchMovie.jsp?movie=8179&loc=52.

Based in Singapore, Commonground Projects, is a creative group whose expertise is in video and branding, have represented the country by being the only Singaporean to participate in A Shaded View On Fashion Film 3 (ASVOFF3) and Tavi on Talenthouse.com. ASVOFF3 is a film festival held in Paris to celebrate and encourage, as it suggests, fashion and film. Commonground Projects deserve some recognition given that the 2minute long video is the only submission from Singapore in the entire fashion film competition.

The short film is directed by Darren Lee, revolves around a plain T-shirt and will make you think dirty thoughts.

CHUN KAI QUN: UTOPIA HIGHWAY http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/08/23/chun-kai-qun-utopia-highway/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/08/23/chun-kai-qun-utopia-highway/#comments Mon, 23 Aug 2010 02:30:41 +0000 Samantha http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=4471

Chun Kai Qun‘s installation ‘Utopia Highway‘ at the Esplanade Concourse is nothing short of breath-taking. Showing his interest in the anxieties and individuals living in a contemporary society, the installation begins with a miniature scene of a village and people driving out of town in search of Utopia. The road ahead takes form of the word ‘Utopia’, suggesting that the journey and search itself is where the Utopian ideal is.

The exhibition runs from now till 3rd October 2010 at the Esplanade Concourse. More after the jump.

In his work, he often brings into play the art of miniature making, diorama making, creating cataclysmic explosions, reminiscent of sensationalistic blockbuster action flicks and video games. Chun has actively participated in various art exhibitions including Drawing Out Conversations at FOST Gallery, TransportAsian at the Singapore Art Museum, Lost in the City at the National Museum of Singapore. In 2007, Chun won a merit award in the 3rd CDL Singapore Sculpture Award exhibition. In 2009, he collaborated in an art project at the 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial (Art Exchange Programme).

The.XS Collective has released yet another mixtape and this time around it’s their latest recruit Mean‘s turn to show off his chops. My favourite track off this mixtape has got to be “Down With Da X” which features my favourite local rapper – Azrael – and DoggFace.

Also look out for these two tracks – “32 Bars” & “Remember The Name” – where Mean really shows his ability on the mic. This is definitely a must-download mixtape (I’m adding the mixtape to my iPod playlist as I write this). Go download it now!
