RCGNTN: make local your focal http://rcgntn.com/blog SHIFTING THE FOCUS BACK TO LOCAL TALENT Tue, 09 Mar 2010 10:55:45 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.8.6 en hourly 1 RED BULL ART OF CAN SINGAPORE 2010 http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/09/red-bull-art-of-can-singapore-2010/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/09/red-bull-art-of-can-singapore-2010/#comments Tue, 09 Mar 2010 10:53:45 +0000 Yawen http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2560 rbsharkrbeye

For the first time in Singapore, Red Bull will be hosting it’s popular international pop art competition here on our sunny island. We have come to associate Red Bull with vibrancy and creativity and this competition proves that the brand strives for nothing less.

rbbullthrurbwave

Red Bull Art of Can was officially launched on the 1st of March, and will be concluding with an exhibition for 10 days at the new *SCAPE from 2nd to 11th of July and finally a judging. The only rule participants have to abide to is to use Red Bull’s trademark cans as part of their artwork, which deserves more thumbs up from us for their recycling efforts.

The great thing about Red Bull Art of Can competition is that anyone can take part and the sky’s the limit. I love how they don’t put a cap on anyone’s creativity because creativity is wild and unpredictable. And the prizes are nothing less than the best, I personally feel that getting even the 3rd prize would make me a very happy winner; the prizes are a trip for 2 to Berlin, weekend trip for 2 to Melbourne and a Canon DSLR camera for 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Red Bull sure knows how to make people happy.

rbelephantrbocto

It’s a win-win situation for everyone because even the public (for the self-proclaimed uncreative people) can get in on the fun by voting on their website! A lucky voter will win a Canon digital camera.

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Registration is now open online at www.redbullartofcan.sg from now to 15 May!

RECAP: CLOGTWO- TERRORWRIST AT DBL O http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/09/recap-clogtwo-terrorwrist-at-dbl-o-artspace/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/09/recap-clogtwo-terrorwrist-at-dbl-o-artspace/#comments Tue, 09 Mar 2010 08:37:19 +0000 Samantha http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2539

Clogtwo is dbl O’s featured artist for the month, and if you missed out his opening exhibition or came in a little late, you would’ve missed this ingenious video thought out by the man himself. Screened when the exhibition was about to start, the video is proof of the effort put in by the artist, who thoughtfully put up a short skit where he was caught by terrorists and couldn’t appear at the exhibition.

Clog’s work never ceases to impress, and his new work “The TerrorWrist” is of no exception. The big-ass 6×3 meter mural pictured above depicts the meaning of Scientology translated through his own vision, with the analytical mind battling the reactive mind in the struggle between religion and science.

Totally love the way he incorporates the body’s inner organs such as the heart, brains, guts and gore.

On top of that, Clogtwo also released an album titled “We’re Not Enemies”, a collaboration between five non-musicians, namely Imran Zainal, Desmond Shen, Musa Bagushair as well as members of Electrocaine Avneesh and Clogtwo himself, to produce an experimental album based on actual occurences that our beloved world is facing today. A pretty good listen, and an intriguing one at that.

Overall, the experience was a good one. Though more can be done to make the place more conducive for showcasing artwork, it is a good initiative by dbl O. Check out more of Clogtwo’s work over at www.clogtwo.com.

DC SHOE X SBTG: CIRCUS OF MUTANTS http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/08/dc-shoe-x-sbtg-circus-of-mutants/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/08/dc-shoe-x-sbtg-circus-of-mutants/#comments Mon, 08 Mar 2010 09:02:28 +0000 Samantha http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2484 dcxsbtg-1

Another milestone for renowned designer/ sneaker customiser Mark Ong better known as SBTG, Circus of Mutants is a collaboration between skate brand DC Shoe and the man himself, who easily is the best candidate for the collab. Embracing skateboarding with a passion since he was young, Mark revealed that the Circus of Mutants were known as legends in his youth when he first picked up the skateboard.

Taking inspiration from the skate crew that was formed in the late 80’s, the collaboration boasts two sneakers, a pair of board shorts, two tees and two hats, all designed by SBTG. The entire collection sees a fly incorporated in the clothing to pay respect to “The Fly”, one of the earlier pioneers in Singaporean skateboarding. His early nickname was branded to Lucas by members of the “Circus of Mutants” crew because of the skateboarders unrivalled ability to spend more time in the air than on the ground.

To commemorate the event, DC Shoe joins forces with local sneaker store GALLERY to launch the Circus of Mutants collection at Rebel Boutique Club on Saturday 13th March ‘10. You can bet on it to be a power-packed night with an autograph session with SBTG, appearances by members of the original Circus of Mutants crew, a live musical performance by Southern California’s Renee Renee as well as a DC skateboard art exhibition where 20 artists from the lion city will be chosen to showcase their work on a DC deck. On top of that, a highly exclusive run (12 pairs!) of True Mids in a purple GALLERY colourway will also be released.

DC Shoe will officially be releasing their Spring 2010 collaboration at local retailers from 14th March 2010.

PHU x BIC BUDDY: EURO http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/08/phu-x-bic-buddy-euro/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/08/phu-x-bic-buddy-euro/#comments Mon, 08 Mar 2010 07:24:53 +0000 Samantha http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2470 euro1euro11

Bic Buddy’s having a custom show in New York and Los Angeles in March/April 2010 showcasing nothing but the best customisers from around the globe, so it’s no surprise that our man Phu is going to represent. Employing his distinct ‘phuturistic’ style on the Bic Buddy, Phu transforms the toy into an Euro hover cruiser complete with a 3″ rebel pilot. And as you already know, his work is not complete without the use of recycled materials, utilizing cardboard, found objects, a Gashapon acrylic teardrop, plastic pellets and wire. The Euro stands at 6″ tall and is definitely going to take out the invaders.

The Iron Lung – Irfan Ilohsix http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/07/the-iron-lung-irfan-ilohsix/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/07/the-iron-lung-irfan-ilohsix/#comments Sun, 07 Mar 2010 14:10:34 +0000 Yasin http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2448 cache_sb_l_668aa88dc9

Regarded by many in the local hip hop circuit as one of the finest if not the finest lyricist of his generation, Irfan Ilohsix is truly a rare breed.
While most of his peers are trying hard to emulate and copy the styles of the Lil’ Waynes and Drakes (I’m not hating here), Irfan breaks that mould and transports people to a time when shaolin monks and swordplays (not auto-tune) ruled the airwaves, when the Chef was Raekwon and when the only thing Digital was Bobby.

Click here to listen to his latest track: “The Iron Lung” .

Title: The Iron Lung
Artist: Irfan Ilohshix
Produced by: Ralph for BrandNewFeelinG
Written by: Irfan Ilohshix
Additional Scratches by: The IZA
Recorded and mixed by: The IZA @ The.XS Lab

[The Iron Lung]
I am the clan’s youngest abbot
the kid with the mantis technique, enemies are severed
paws of leopards and claws
that slices your skin like swords
who the fuck is your warlord?
i heard that your technique is raw
the red fists of boar
and that you had thousand heads rolling on the floor
but cant compare to me, absorbing soul of enemies
like solar energies
legs of mantodies, tang lang shou
my slang could’ve slain your whole school of kung fu

[The Enemy]
my style is the fist of the lotus
and clans from any dojo scared to provoke us
the youngest shogun, yeah i heard of you
no mercy, spare no one, i shall murder you
i heard of a young one, named iron lung
who run around with a bad tongue
figured it was you who disfigured my best ninja
rumours has it that your master was the iza

[The Iron Lung]
yeah, he thought me all, the styles and the secrets
no other clans kick it the same way we flip it

[The Enemy]
you talked to much, save your breath and keep it
you’re about to die in your district

[The Iron Lung]
don’t you know how many heads i’ve twisted?

[The Enemy]
who fucking care?
i’ll just cut your head and disappear in thin air

[The Iron Lung]
my doggface technique will bring fear
when i sip the sake and drink beer

[The Enemy]
i’ll watch your skin tear

[The Iron Lung]
drunken monkey, remain drunk

[The Enemy]
that technique killed more than a thousand shaolin monks

[The Iron Lung]
one more word and i’ll cut your fucking tongue

[The Enemy]
prepare for the pounding of the gong
with my fist of king kong

[The Iron Lung]
yeah i heard of the technique

[The Enemy]
hush and get ready to die

[The Iron Lung]
hmmm you bastard!

RECAP: NOISE SINGAPORE 2010 SHOWCASE http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/07/recap-noise-singapore-2010-showcase/ http://rcgntn.com/blog/2010/03/07/recap-noise-singapore-2010-showcase/#comments Sun, 07 Mar 2010 10:26:16 +0000 Samantha http://rcgntn.com/blog/?p=2430 CIMG0409

NOISE Singapore, an initiative by the NAC and in their fifth year running is known to many as a platform for Singaporean artists, photographers and musicians to showcase their work, and if good enough, chosen for their apprenticeship program where some of the industry’s respected figures play the role of mentor to these aspiring talent. And true to their word, the NOISE Singapore Showcase 2010 houses some of the most interesting work we have seen, many of which we have yet to discover ourselves!

CIMG0401CIMG0402CIMG0412CIMG0417

Spotting a couple of familiar pieces such as Dory’s custom playmobils (third from top), there were many pieces that were pretty eye-catching, one of which was Muhammed Herman who was chosen for the NOISE Apprenticeship Programme. Set in a wet market where many would overlook as a place of interest, the photographer injects much intrigue into the marketplace where the simple act of preparing and selling meat was one that deserved attention.

CIMG0406CIMG0407CIMG0404

Our pictures do not do justice to the original work, so head on down to level 3 of Raffles City Shopping Centre and give them your support, or give NOISE a click to check out their showcases in full resolution. The exhibition is currently running until 10th March.
